Street Faces by Aurélien Fontanet

When you laugh, the world laughs with you. Often times literally with creepy faces that appear to be built in to the surrounding sidewalks, walls, and devices. Quietly they watch, judging… contemplating some secret fate that is yet to befall you and fostering a perverse pleasure in not being able to warn you (they are inanimate objects after all, they can’t talk, you know. You’re probably just imagining things anyways).

It’s always important to pack the bare essentials when it comes to cult classic movies. Alizee’s Movie Hipster Kit series distills several iconic films into their most memorable props, telling the story in just a few simple inanimate objects. You can request a print at her curioos page.

Derailing My Train of Thought by Thomas Wightman

Says Thomas about this project: “The final book sculpture of my major project series. Like the previous two sculptures it uses a visual metaphor to convey the emotions of obsessive-compulsive disorder, and embodies my research by visualising an expression used by a sufferer of OCD. The expression was ‘derailing my train of thought’, because the person felt that the rituals they had to perform were disrupting their day. Where the compulsions and worry would side track them from doing everyday activities.

To convey this metaphor the sculpture shows a train travelling on a journey that has become disrupted, leading it to derail from its set path. Typography was used on the tracks for the title of the piece, also type was used for the coal. In the scene it shows the coal cart tipping over where the type has become mixed up to symbolise the mixed emotions during anxiety and panic”.

Balloon Arts by Michael Abrahamson

I’ve seen plenty of balloon voodoo in my time following clowns around, but Michael’s balloon-fu is stronger and geekier than most. Aside from balloon-twisted T-Rex skeletons and iconic video game characters like Cloud and Mario, Michael’s air-bending masterpiece has go to be his Balloon Xenomorph, a meticulously folded tribute to H.R. Giger’s grotesque alien anatomies.

Pipe-Cleaner Critters by Lauren Ryan

One time I made a fork (or maybe it was a trident, though I never killed anyone with it) out of pipe-cleaners and I never shut up about it for years. Lauren puts most pitiful homemade creations to shame with her lifelike pipe-cleaner creatures, who despite their artificial nature, possess that game-changing fuzziness that makes them so realistic and pettable. I still like my fork, but I actually feel like her animals may attempt to eat me at any moment.

Dark Oils by Jeff Christensen

It’s a dark, Guillermo del Toro-esque world that Jeff’s macabre denizens inhabit, living out tormented existences or living to torment others. His oil paintings reflect an underworld of impossible anatomies and wretched landscapes while still possessing an almost innocent, Alice in Wonderland-style whimsy.

Macabre Makeup by Miss Lakune

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, though sometimes it’s just an empty socket. Lakune’s elaborate makeup designs must surely resemble the kind of looks tormented souls ask for in the salon at the end of Hell, where looking fabulous goes hand in twisted, gnarled hand with the tortured demons locked inside, desperately clawing to get out.

Engraved Coins by Shaun Hughes

Colloquially known as Hobo Nickels, an old form of coin engraving, Shaun uses vectorized versions of his own designs, which are then meticulously carved into the face of a coin using an oldschool plotter printer. The resulting intricate designs resemble the ornate borders of illuminated manuscripts, currencies that seem to emanate from parallel steampunk or Victorian worlds.

Midnight Valentine by John Harwood

Everybody, at some point, just needs a little bit of love in the middle of the night, whether it be familiar or fleeting. John’s blinking neon invitation welcomes the lonely hearts that meet over a drink, a song, and a roll of the dice.

Allegorical Heroes by José Quintero

Batman, Superman, and Spidey take on legendary figures of mythology in this set from José, linking them to the original superheroes of the classical eras and while the masks and use of spandex as defensive fashion may have been a slight deviation from the past, the spirit has always remained constant.
